September 6, 2026A high-level symposium on Pan-Africanism and Reparatory Justice brought together academics, traditional leaders, students and other stakeholders to examine the future of African unity, dignity and development.
The symposium, held at Makerere University, provided a platform for participants to discuss the importance of Pan-African intellectualism and the need to address systems and structures that continue to limit Africa’s social, economic and intellectual development.
Discussions focused on African unity, decolonisation, reparatory justice and the role of education and intellectual leadership in shaping Africa’s future. Participants emphasised the importance of developing African-centred approaches to knowledge, governance and development while strengthening connections between Africans on the continent and those in the diaspora.
The event also highlighted the responsibility of universities and young people to contribute to conversations about Africa’s future. Through research, innovation, critical thinking and collaboration, the younger generation can play a central role in advancing Pan-African ideals and developing solutions to challenges facing the continent.
The symposium further reinforced the importance of recognising Africa’s historical experiences and pursuing meaningful conversations around justice, dignity, identity and reparations.
The discussions demonstrated the continued relevance of Pan-Africanism as a framework for promoting solidarity among African peoples and advancing a more self-reliant and united continent.
